Advise building owners on smart technology — sensors, systems integration, analytics, and tenant experience — with vendor-neutral judgment.
Who this course is for
Facilities and PropTech professionals, systems integrators moving to advisory, and commercial real estate staff leading smart-building initiatives.
What you’ll be able to do
- Map the smart building stack: devices, networks, platforms, applications
- Assess a building’s current state and define use cases that pay
- Evaluate vendors and avoid lock-in with an integration-first mindset
- Address cybersecurity and data governance for building systems
- Build the roadmap and business case owners will fund
Course curriculum
Module 1: The smart building stack and market landscape
A vendor-neutral map of the territory: field devices and sensors, controllers and building systems (BAS, lighting, access, metering), networks and protocols at concept level (BACnet, open APIs), data platforms/digital twins, and the application layer (FDD analytics, space utilization, tenant apps).
Module 2: Use cases that actually pay
Smart building projects fail when technology leads and problems follow.
Module 3: Assessing the building: current-state discovery
The assessment methodology: system inventory (what exists, what age, what protocols), network readiness review, data availability audit (can you even get the points out of the BAS?), stakeholder interviews (operations, IT, leasing, tenants), and gap analysis against target use cases.
Module 4: Architecture, vendors, and avoiding lock-in
The decisions that haunt buildings for 15 years.
Module 5: Cybersecurity and data governance for building systems
OT security is now a board-level issue.
Module 6: Roadmap, business case, and running the engagement
Pulling it together: the phased roadmap (foundation → quick wins → advanced use cases), business case construction (hard savings, soft value, risk mitigation), governance for ongoing operation (who owns the analytics findings?), and consulting delivery — assessment engagements, owner’s advisor roles, pricing models, and the executive presentation that gets funded.
